Naturopathic nutrition

Naturopathy is a dynamic approach to the assessment, prevention, and treatment of common, complex and chronic diseases. In correct the balance, the foods we eat can promote a healthy metabolism and gut microbiome. In the wrong quantities and proportions, we become overweight, undernourished and at risk of disease. Nutrition also impacts immune function, transmission of nerve impulses, tissue repair and a whole plethora of essential physiological processes that operate within the body. Naturopathy investigates how these multiple systems cooperate with or work against one another to feed health or disease.

gut health and the microbiome

When it comes to the gut microbiome, you really are what you eat. Soluble fibre in plant materials and live cultures in fermented foods provide the necessary pre and probiotics to nourish the microbiome, allowing healthy colonies to thrive. Conversely restricted, unbalanced intakes cause the bad bacteria to challenge and eventually overtake the good. This impedes digestive function and may manifest, amongst other things, as abdominal discomfort, poor immune function, low energy levels, brain fog or conditions affecting the health of the skin and intimate areas.

soil health, plant diversity & environmental contamination

We must also consider environmental factors which affect the quality of foods making their way onto our plates and water into our glasses. Over-farming has stripped soils of many beneficial nutrients and minerals and subsequent processing further compounds quality of the harvest. Pesticides and chemical fertilizers pollute our food before it’s even had a chance to grow, and run-off spreads contaminants to water courses impacting fish and other aquatic food sources.

Then there’s the impact of arable farming on plant diversity. Vast swathes of land once richly populated with edible plants have been torn up, taking with them the unique nutrients and bacterial colonies that would otherwise bring more variety in the microbiome. Add to that the artificial sweeteners, antibiotics, plastic residues, contraceptives and heavy metals that cannot be neutralised or filtered using existing water treatment technology and we see a clear case for adapting the diet to eliminate toxins as far as possible. Naturopathy aims to do just that. To detoxify the body from the inside out and to educate a wholesome approach to nutrition that supports wellbeing and increases resistance to disease.

Food intolerances

Allergy vs food intolerance

Food allergies and intolerances share many symptoms, however the two use different pathways and describe specific reactions. Allergies cause strong reactions which occur rapidly even when the allergen is present in very small amounts. Itching and hives indicate an immune response and can appear within seconds. Swelling of the face and tongue may follow, causing airway constriction and breathing difficulties. The cascade of allergic messengers can put the person into anaphylactic shock, a life threatening medical emergency. These people are advised to carry an EpiPen at all times.

Intolerances are more of a quality of life issue. The response is inflammatory rather than immune hence there is no anaphylaxis. Sufferers may be able to tolerate small amounts without reaction. When they do occur, symptoms can be delayed for up to three days, making it difficult to determine which foods were responsible for the reaction. While digestive discomfort is the hallmark of food intolerance, they can lead to leaky gut syndrome, low mood, low energy, hormonal disturbance and imbalance in the gut bacteria (dysbiosis). Many people feel they have IBS with instant feelings of bloating, gas, discomfort and abdominal pain. Headache, fatigue and skin eruptions may also occur.

testing for food intolerances

Suitable for adults and children from the age of two

Our test analyses a finger prick blood sample with same-day results (usually within an hour). The blood is mixed with a reagent and developed on a dish impregnated with cells representing 42 common foods to which many people with digestive complaints are sensitive. This includes various grains, dairy, nuts, meats, fish, eggs, legumes, fruits etc.

The test looks for what is known as immunoglobulin-g, a marker indicative of an inflammatory reaction between the blood and proteins in the food. Cells provoking an immune response become stained by the reagent, with deeper colours indicative of stronger reactivity and more significant intolerance. Results are emailed across once the dish has developed, along with advice on elimination and reintroduction.

Mineral deficiencies & toxicity

role of minerals in the body

Minerals are essential for optimal health and function at the cellular level. They play key roles in such metabolic processes as muscular activity, endocrine function, reproduction, skeletal integrity and overall development. Required in only small amounts, they are known as micronutrients. The body cannot make minerals itself, therefore they must be obtained through the diet. Examples include calcium and phosphorous for strong bones and teeth and magnesium which mediates over 300 reactions in the body. Iodine supports thyroid health and metabolism, iron supports red blood cells and energy levels, zinc the immune system etc..Mineral deficiencies cause symptoms including muscular weakness and cramps, fatigue, poor appetite, tingling sensations, heart arrythmias, depression and difficulty concentrating. In excess minerals can not only build up to toxic levels, they can also deplete other essential nutrients.

environmental contaminants

Toxic load also has environmental sources. Our drinking water is contaminated with such things as plastic residues, antibiotics and hormones as well as persistent compounds including aspartame. Leaded petrol was banned in the year 2000, however research indicates that airborne particles persist to this day. Many of our pots and pans are made from aluminium, a neurotoxin. Tooth fillings used to be made with mercury, arsenic was used in textiles and wallpapers and uranium in fertilizers. Heavy metals contaminate our soils and accumulate in roots of plant materials. Run-off contaminates water and concentrates heavy metals in the livers of certain fish populations.

Low mood and energy, stresss/anxiety, fatigue, sluggish metabolism, hormonal imbalances, weight issues, poor sleep, hyperactivity, poor blood sugar control and aches and pains can all stem from mineral deficiencies/excess and toxicity in the body.

testing for deficiencies, hormonal/metabolic profile & toxicity

Following discussion of your symptoms, we take a teaspoon’s worth of hair from two to three areas on the crown of the head and nape of the neck. Hair sampling is a non-invasive method used to estimate the levels of essential minerals and toxins in the body. Circulating in the blood they stick to hair roots and progress up the shaft as it grows. Blood, spit and urine samples give a snap shot of levels at the time of sampling, however hair tells the story over a longer period of time indicating habitual intakes rather than one off exposures.

Lab analyses determine the levels and ratios of minerals and toxic elements in the body. A full report is generated, with charts showing levels in relation to reference values, upper and lower limits. Results can take up to two weeks and will be discussed at follow-up along with dietary and supplemental recommendations to optimise mineral levels and detoxify the body.
