Our nutritional therapies
Naturopathic nutrition
Naturopathy is a dynamic approach to the assessment, prevention, and treatment of common, complex and chronic diseases. In correct the balance, the foods we eat can promote a healthy metabolism and gut microbiome. In the wrong quantities and proportions, we become overweight, undernourished and at risk of disease. Nutrition also impacts immune function, transmission of nerve impulses, tissue repair and a whole plethora of essential physiological processes that operate within the body. Naturopathy investigates how these multiple systems cooperate with or work against one another to feed health or disease.
gut health and the microbiome
When it comes to the gut microbiome, you really are what you eat. Soluble fibre in plant materials and live cultures in fermented foods provide the necessary pre and probiotics to nourish the microbiome, allowing healthy colonies to thrive. Conversely restricted, unbalanced intakes cause the bad bacteria to challenge and eventually overtake the good. This impedes digestive function and may manifest, amongst other things, as abdominal discomfort, poor immune function, low energy levels, brain fog or conditions affecting the health of the skin and intimate areas.
soil health, plant diversity & environmental contamination
We must also consider environmental factors which affect the quality of foods making their way onto our plates and water into our glasses. Over-farming has stripped soils of many beneficial nutrients and minerals and subsequent processing further compounds quality of the harvest. Pesticides and chemical fertilizers pollute our food before it’s even had a chance to grow, and run-off spreads contaminants to water courses impacting fish and other aquatic food sources.
Then there’s the impact of arable farming on plant diversity. Vast swathes of land once richly populated with edible plants have been torn up, taking with them the unique nutrients and bacterial colonies that would otherwise bring more variety in the microbiome. Add to that the artificial sweeteners, antibiotics, plastic residues, contraceptives and heavy metals that cannot be neutralised or filtered using existing water treatment technology and we see a clear case for adapting the diet to eliminate toxins as far as possible. Naturopathy aims to do just that. To detoxify the body from the inside out and to educate a wholesome approach to nutrition that supports wellbeing and increases resistance to disease.
