what is osteopathy page

Our natural state is one of movement and vitality.

Osteopathy addresses painful complaints and those affecting mobility and function; it uses manual techniques to restore musculoskeletal balance and alleviates pain naturally, without the need for medication.

Founded in the Midwest of America in 1874, osteopathy has it's roots in the ancient folk practice of bonesetting and displays influences from the 18th century traditions of phrenology and mesmerism. It's philosophy is grounded in mechanics and surmises that optimal structure promotes free nerve signalling and the circulation of fluids for cellular nourishment and tissue repair. Early practitioners applied osteopathy as a complete system of healing, addressing internal dysfunction alongside painful conditions.

Modern practice retains elements of the classical approach, as seen in the treatment of digestive, reproductive, and respiratory complaints as well as those affecting the sinuses and the ear-nose-throat complex. Skeletal adjustments create space for the organs and tissues and relieve pressure on the nerves and vessels suppling their nutrition and commands. The organs are freed to function as they should and the body systems cooperate to achieve homeostasis, overall health and wellbeing.

Osteopathic diagnoses rely on observation and palpation to evaluate assymetry and identify motion restrictions and their compensations. Manual techniques include soft-tissue and fascial release, joint mobilisation and manipulation. More subtle methods address the superficial and deep fascia, ligamentous strain patterns and the cranio-sacral rhythm.

We fit our treatments to the person, not their complaint; each comes with a unique story and factors which may predispose or maintain their condition. Occupation, environment, exercise, lifestyle, nutrition and psychosocial factors are all relevant in osteopathic diagnostics, with the holistic approach yielding better treatment outcomes than one based on symptoms alone.

We encourage self-management and provide exercise prescription and natural remedy advice as required. Our store features herbal rubs, creams and balms for natural pain relief alongside traditional and homeopathic preparations for minor ailments and supplements for general health.
